Are there any lessons the police can learn from this kind of thing?
The lesson is: if you want to target someone who’s compromised, maybe you should look beyond physicality. It’s not always the best way to catch a hacker.
I wouldn’t be surprised if people working in the security community are starting to wonder if it’s more appropriate to try to scan for logical vulnerabilities than it is to just look at the behavior.
Do you think traditional computer security tools have the flexibility to deal with the ways modern attackers work?
If you don’t do any scanning, you don’t have a choice. There are so many sophisticated and sophisticated people who are focused on attacking computers. We can’t afford to ignore the fact that there are sophisticated threats out there.
So scanning is required.
At the same time, there’s a lot of false positives. People ask me if I would scan a network for that one site I used for a while, and I say yes, and they say, “Well, wouldn’t you have an 80 percent false positive rate?”
The false positive rate is very, very high.
But that’s just how it is. We’re just not that sophisticated. We don’t have as many people, and it’s not as easy to protect against these sorts of attacks as it is to detect physical attacks. That’s not a criticism of traditional people, it’s just a reality.
